modern artifacts, owned by Bill and Sharon Montgomery, is a product of the couple's mutual interest in art and modern design and an evolution from their previous careers in & around the retail industry. The shop showcases urbane handmade goods, presenting a curated collection of modern aesthetic and quality. The diversity of classic mediums provides a wide range of functional and decorative wares for the discerning customer and those searching for a unique gift. Some works are solely decorative, most are functional and all are visually stimulating.
Within the shop, Zig Zag Tag (named by Lily Montgomery, age 7) welcomes children of all ages to grab a crayon and create their own artifact to take home or hang in the ZZT children's gallery. A fun and eclectic collection of handmade toys, gifts and decor will delight shoppers both young and young at heart.
Adjacent to the shop is what is affectionately known as "the shed" (thank you Courtney for so naming it). Previously used only for storage, this reclaimed space will occasionally host events, pop-up shops and other exhibits. It is also a good excuse to throw a party now and then.
modern artifacts is a labor of love for its owners who have tried to create a fun, eye-catching, stimulating environment that is welcoming to all. A nexus of art and commerce that, hopefully, shows how delightful many of our everyday objects can be when created by hand, one at a time.
Bill and Sharon Montgomery moved to Richmond, Sharon's hometown, from the Washington, D.C. area in 2010. They live in The Fan with their two children, Devlin and Lily plus the most-perfect-dog-in-the-world, Zooey. Bill and Sharon have so many wonderful friends, artists and customers to thank for making the launch and first year of this new business a success. Many thanks to all!
Last, big thanks to Devlin, Lily and Zooey for their patience. Well, most of the time.
